Smart Moves Pilates

Whether you're preparing for a triathlon or just want to learn how to move efficiently; whether you're recovering from an injury or want to prevent one, a customized program is the ideal way to meet your fitness goals.

Using the Pilates exercise method, Sue works to meet your individual needs and work with your body. She develops a fitness plan tailored to your lifestyle and limitations. Her personal attention will help you achieve the fitness level you're aiming for and enjoy yourself in the process.

People with injuries can benefit from Sue's training in Pilates for Injury and Special Populations.

Private Instruction

  • Private instruction focuses on your specific needs and goals. Personal attention can help you learn the Pilates method quicker than group class instruction. It can push your Pilates practice to a higher level of fitness and understanding.

Pilates for Golfers

  • Learn exercises that prevent injuries , create strength and flexibility in your body, specifically for golfing. I have trained in STOTT Pilates program for golfers, have seen the results in improved scores, greater flexibility and less injury.

Pilates Workshop for the Rider

This workshop will teach riders Pilates posture, exercises to obtain Pilates posture and give them feedback on posture while riding. They will be given follow up information on areas to work on and what exercises will help them.

Pre workshop information / An email to students telling them the plan for the day, what to bring and their scheduled riding time will be sent in advance of the workshop.

Packet / Each student will receive a packet with a questionnaire, visuals, homework handout, flexband and my contact information.

Equipment / I will bring mats, flexbands and stability balls.

Time – 6 hours total (approximately)

2 hours-Pilates basic information and exercises
½ hour / Pilates introduction, how basic Pilates positions simulate riding positions
1/2 hour / Fill out questionnaire/break
1 hour / Pilates exercises taught, practiced using mats and stability balls

45 minutes / Tack up horse

Riding with coaching / Scheduled in 45 minute periods per student, pre assigned ride times for students
15 minute warm up on horse / Riding Coach
30 minute riding with coaching, Pilates and Riding Coach
Follow up information sent by email.

Dates / Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays are available with advance booking.

Time / Open to any 6 hour period that works for scheduling.
11AM - 5PM preferred.

Cost / A minimum of 5 students is preferred to book a workshop.
My fee is $65 / student plus fee from the Riding Coach

Class Descriptions

  • Pilates Strength & Stretching
    • A Pilates, core strength, based class utilizing dumbbells, stability ball and flexbands to provide challenge and stretch relaxation to revitalize you for the afternoon.
  • Beginner Pilates
    • Small beginner Group classes scheduled throughout the year. The basic principles of Pilates exercise are practiced and incorporated into a beginner workout. The building blocks for a safe Pilates practice.
  • Experienced Pilates
    • Essential and level 2 exercises taught with focus on correct form, flow and a well rounded work out to challenge the experienced student Basic Pilates exercise knowledge a must for this class.
  • Pilates with Small Equipment
    • Pilates exercises incorporating use of the fitness circle, foam roller, and stability ball to further challenge the core muscles, and form of the exercises. A fun way to add challenge to your Pilates workout.
  • Essential Pilates
    • Beginning level Pilates exercises, focusing on incorporating core principles into an essential level workout.

Athletic by nature, Sue earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Biology at the University of Texas. After discovering Pilates, she embarked on a second career to teach physical conditioning, and opened the Smart Moves studio in Florence, MA. In addition to her Certification with STOTT PILATES®, she has trained with Mary Bowen in classic Pilates and with Balanced Body Pilates. She is certified by American Council of Exercise as a Personal Trainer, and certified in Fitness for the Older Adult by the American Institute of Physical Educators. She continues her education training through numerous specialized workshops.

More than a personal trainer, Sue posseses a unique combination of  natural physical ability, extensive training and education, and a caring, outgoing personality. Enthusiastic and encouraging, she offers personalized training with a sense of humor and without pressure or judgement. "At the end of a session, I want my clients to feel good and know that they have been taken care of for an hour."

  4. Continue on Pine Street past the stop sign.

  5. Turn left onto N. Maple.
  6. After about ½ mile, you will reach a traffic light at the center of FLORENCE.
  7. Go straight through the light, continuing on Maple St, about ¼ mile, until the road comes to a dead end at the bottom of the hill.
  8. Turn right onto Nonotuck St.
  9. Go about ¼ mile until Nonotuck St comes to a dead end at Pine St.

  1. From 91 N, take exit 18 (Rt 5, Northampton)
  2. Stay to the left, and, at the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Rt 5/Pleasant St.
  3. Go approximately 1 mile on Pleasant St. to the first traffic light in the center of Northampton
  4. Turn left at that light onto Rt 9 / Main St.
  5. Follow Rt 9 W for about 2 ½ miles to the center of FLORENCE (just past the Miss Florence Diner)
  6. Turn left at the light onto Maple St, and go about ¼ mile, until the road comes to a dead end at the bottom of the hill
  7. Turn right onto Nonotuck St.
  8. Go about ¼ mile until Nonotuck St comes to a dead end at Pine St.
